Kochi, Kerala
From Infopark and SmartCity Kochi in Kakkanad to the port and shipping operations around Willingdon Island, Kochi's workforce spans IT campuses and container terminals alike — and a clinic visit means fighting Kochi's notorious NH66 and Vytilla traffic just for a ten-minute consultation. Kochi is Kerala's commercial and industrial capital — anchored by Cochin Port and the Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal, India's first dedicated container transshipment hub — alongside a large IT and ITES sector split across two campuses in Kakkanad: Infopark Kochi, home to over 580 companies and roughly 72,000 professionals, and SmartCity Kochi, a Dubai Holding–promoted SEZ township with Fortune 500 tenants. Employees commute in from across Ernakulam district — Kakkanad, Kaloor, Edappally, Vytilla — on a road network that Kochi Metro and the Vyttila Mobility Hub, one of Kerala's busiest transit interchanges, were built to relieve but haven't fully solved. Unlike a purely IT-driven city, Kochi's economy is genuinely mixed: port and shipping logistics, Cochin Shipyard, and a large wholesale-trading sector sit alongside the tech parks, so the working population MCME serves here includes shift-based port and logistics staff as well as office-based IT employees. Kerala's coast, including Kochi, is one of the India Meteorological Department's monitoring points for declaring the southwest monsoon's onset each year — landfall typically comes in late May to early June, days to weeks ahead of most of the country — so Kochi's monsoon-linked viral season tends to start earlier than it does for MCME's other city pages.
Infopark and SmartCity Kochi's larger IT and ITES tenants generally run formal HR portals, so a digital certificate uploaded the same day is usually enough — the same as most major Indian tech parks. Kochi's port, shipping, and logistics workforce around Cochin Port, Vallarpadam, and Cochin Shipyard more often works fixed shifts, where a certificate stating the advised rest period helps supervisors adjust shift coverage rather than just logging an absence. Smaller trading and retail businesses elsewhere in the city tend to be more flexible about format, accepting anything from a PDF to a printed copy.
More on sick leave certificates →Kerala Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1960
Under Section 13 of the Kerala Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1960, an employee who completes 12 months of continuous service is entitled to leave with wages of up to 12 days a year on the ground of sickness or accident, and separately to casual leave with wages of up to 12 days a year on any reasonable ground. The same section also provides annual holidays with wages of 12 days after 12 months of service, accumulable up to 24 days — a distinct entitlement from sick and casual leave. Continuity of service for these purposes is preserved through interruptions caused by sickness, accident, or authorised leave (including holidays), up to 90 days in aggregate across a 12-month period. If an employee entitled to sick leave is discharged by their employer while sick, the employer must still pay the leave wages due at the time of discharge. As with other states' Shops Act provisions, sick leave availed under Kerala's Act is typically supported by a doctor-issued medical certificate, even though the Act itself does not prescribe a specific certificate format. Kerala's 12-day sick and 12-day casual leave structure closely mirrors the entitlement in neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Telangana, and sits well above Haryana's lower 7-day floor.
Employees covered under the ESI Act at establishments within the scheme's reach can additionally claim ESI sickness benefit, administered separately by ESIC.

Under Section 13 of the Kerala Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1960, employees who complete 12 months of continuous service are entitled to up to 12 days of paid sick leave and up to 12 days of paid casual leave a year, separate from the Act's 12-day annual holiday entitlement.
Yes. Your doctor can note the specific rest period or shift window advised on the certificate, which supervisors at Cochin Port, Vallarpadam, or Cochin Shipyard operations can use to adjust shift rosters — the same as for any shift-based role.
Yes. You'll receive a PDF by email that you can upload to Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, or whichever HR system your Infopark or SmartCity Kochi employer uses, the same way IT companies elsewhere in India process it.
No — a viral fever certificate is assessed and issued the same way regardless of when in the year you need it. It's just worth knowing that Kochi, on Kerala's coast, typically sees the southwest monsoon's landfall in late May, days to weeks ahead of most of India, so the seasonal viral-fever rise here tends to start earlier too.
Yes, the handwritten-certificate-with-courier add-on (₹700) typically reaches Kochi addresses, including Kakkanad and Willingdon Island, within 2–3 working days.
Yes. Telemedicine consultations are recognised under India's Telemedicine Practice Guidelines, 2020, and a certificate issued by an NMC-registered doctor after an online consultation carries the same legal standing as one issued in person.
